Three LA Hotels Ideal For Working While Traveling
From guest room desks to poolside offices and restaurant workspaces, these properties make balancing laptop time and leisure easy
More remote work for many of us means traveling to big cities more often. On our most recent visit to LA, while balancing laptop time with leisure, we stayed at three hotels in three different neighborhoods: DTLA’s The Hoxton, West Hollywood’s Pendry and the Silver Lake Pool & Inn. On location, we discovered how these properties all pair smart design with contemporary hospitality, and how that deceptively simple formula serves the ways working remotely continues to evolve.
Pendry West Hollywood
With its large concentration of hotels and proximity to Beverly Hills and other well-frequented neighborhoods, West Hollywood is popular for those looking to see the sights and business travelers alike. The Pendry West Hollywood is one of the newer properties along Sunset Boulevard, and boasts a focus on art, along with Art Deco touches in its interiors. All rooms feature warm hardwood floors and marble bathrooms, floor-to-ceiling windows, Bluetooth speakers and stocked minibars. Staying in a Studio Suite afforded us more room in an open-plan with a sofa and small table with chairs—an object that doubles as a desk and a spot for morning coffee or evening room service. (We skipped in-room dining however in favor of the nearby restaurant Connie & Ted’s where we enjoyed perhaps the most deliciously sweet uni we’d ever had.) Merois, the Pendry’s rooftop restaurant, offers a standout meal too. With a view of the glittering city below, start with cocktails at the bar and, once seated, a satisfying array of items from the pan-Asian-inspired menu will follow. You’ll find some of the same dishes also served during the day at the adjacent pool.
Other options for unwinding include a full-service spa with treatments like Muscle Relief + Vibration Therapy, which incorporates a vibration therapy device (similar to a Theragun). It’s the kind of thoughtful detail that sets the Pendry apart to make a stay there satisfying for any reason. A case in point, bathrooms highlight the simple pleasure of a great shower, an experience that’s especially welcome after long days of meetings, travel and work.
The Hoxton, Downtown LA
The Hoxton, Downtown LA provides rooms with generously sized windows and decor well-suited for dining and working alike, stylish interiors, and two onsite restaurants that exceed expectations for hotel offerings. The feast we enjoyed in our room late one evening proved how much a feature like quality room service matters when you’re trying to fit work and leisure agendas into one trip. We ordered from rooftop restaurant Cabra’s delicious Peruvian-inspired dishes (which arrived swiftly and much warmer than most in-room dining) including beef empanadas and wood-fired cauliflower seasoned with mint, lime, an herb called huacatay and crispy seaweed. The “Chocolate on Chocolate with Crunchy Chocolate” (chocolate cake in a pool of chocolate goat milk and topped with chocolate-caramel whip and chocolate quinoa) was a favorite.
The Hoxton’s downtown location puts you among architectural beauties, many of them landmarks and several in the Beaux-Arts style that inspired the hotel’s design. The rooftop pool itself overlooks the yellow-and-blue tiled domes of the 1914 Herald Examiner Building, an early work by architect Julia Morgan in a Mission Revival style.
Silver Lake Pool & Inn
On the cusp of Silver Lake and East Hollywood, the Silver Lake Pool & Inn makes it easy to see friends and colleagues on that side of LA. While there are no desks in the rooms, you won’t be alone on your laptop should you decide to work poolside at the saltwater pool. It’s all part of a social vibe you’ll find at other hotels in the Palisociety group too.
An Erewhon up the block is convenient for prepared food and snacks, and there are countless coffee shops, restaurants and bars a short walk away. The hotel eatery—Marco Polo Trattoria and Bar—is open for breakfast, brunch, lunch and happy hour for an apertivo; it also has a separate pool menu filled with all kinds of tropical cocktails. While the dishes may be Italian leaning, the hotel itself offers design that channels laidback California minimalism.
