Respoke Handcrafted Upcycled Footwear

Respoke makes footwear (and other products) from upcycled designer silk scarves (mostly Hermès, Gucci, Pucci, McQueen and Louis Vuitton). What started with espadrilles has expanded to include sneakers, wedges and mules. Because the source material is a scarf each shoe is unique, with some pairs offering nearly symmetrical designs and others a complimentary pairing of the source material’s pattern. The shoes are sustainably handmade in family-owned workshops in Spain using natural materials including jute and rubber; the silk is adhered with heat and stitching—no glue is needed. Left over material (along with recovered material from worn shoes) is then used by company co-founder Chris Bartick in his artworks ensuring that waste is kept to a minimum. Pricing starts at $295 and goes up to $745 based on shoe style and source material.

The hero product of a new “Shrooms in Bloom” capsule collection from Parks Project and Merrell, these Moab 3 hiking shoes are made with HyphaLite™, a 100% bio-based, biodegradable and regenerative mushroom leather. Like all Merrell Moab 3s they have a Vibram outsole with extra grip that covers the heel and toe for long-term wear protection. Other materials include recycled canvas with 8% pineapple yarn upper and 100% recycled laces. The uplifting, summery, flora-inspired colorway is carried through the t-shirts, pants, shorts, socks and hat in the collection. The collaboration will donate $9k to the LA County Parks Foundation to support their work to “improve community health through parks, recreation and conservation.”

Honoring 65,000 years of Australian culture, Breville has worked with Alison Page—a Wadi Wadi and Walbanga woman of the Yuin nation and founder of the National Aboriginal Design Agency—to create the Aboriginal Culinary Journey collection. Four different artists created original works for the collection; they each own the copyright to their works and receive royalties from the sale of the products. Further, Breville is donating 100% of the profits from this collection to be split between the National Indigenous Culinary Institute and an Indigenous scholarship fund at the University of Technology Sydney. A total of 10,000 units were produced with the goal to raise AUD$1,000,000. Shown here is the Piruwa Kettle by Yalti Napangati.
